Nancy Satin has had an exceedingly varied and interesting life, growing up in New York City, where her parents owned a restaurant. She was an academic, not an artist, and after marrying at 19 and graduating college at 20, she became a high school English teacher in Long Beach, New York in 1965. She moved to Swampscott, MA, in 1974 with her husband and two small children, soon studying pottery and glaze chemistry with Trudi Curtis at Clay Design II in Marblehead. In 1978, she established her own pottery studio and won an Honorable Mention at the Marblehead Festival of the Arts. She participated in A Member’s Show of New Works at the Society of Arts & Crafts in Boston and won an Honorable Mention at the Swampscott Arts Association. Her whimsical pottery was sold by the Quadrum Gallery in Chestnut Hill  and Jubilation Gallery in Newton Centre. She had her first solo exhibition at the Newton Free Library and another at the Calypso Cafe on Tremont Street in Boston. Her work was in the Goodfellow Catalog of Wonderful Things for Home & Office in 1985, and until 1986, she was represented by the Judith N. Wolov Gallery at the Boston Design Center. Life intruded, and she spent the next eight years manufacturing women’s belts in her own company in Waltham, MA, called Fashion Technologies.

After selling her business in 1995, she started experimenting with new mediums for her art, studying stone carving, sculpture and learning to draw at the DeCordova Museum School in Lincoln, MA. She began her long association with the Acorn Gallery & School of Art in Marblehead, MA in the fall of 1998, starting her life as an oil painter in 1999 under the tutelage of Debra Freeman Highberger, then Jack Highberger, Alexis Baliotis Kereakoglow and Aj Rombach. She has been painting for the last 20 years and is forever grateful to her painting teachers for giving her one of the great gifts of her life: the ability to look at a blank canvas and make something of it.

Nancy reestablished her connections with the Marblehead Festival of the Arts, exhibiting sculpture, drawings and paintings every summer from 1998 through 2018. Since 2006, she has exhibited her work at the BallenIsles Art Expo in Palm Beach Gardens, FL every January. On November 29, 2011, a solo exhibition of 24 of her contemporary oil paintings opened in Palm Beach, FL at John DeMedeiros on Worth Avenue. In March of 2012, a still life of hers was included in an exhibition at the Lynn Museum in Lynn, MA to celebrate the 115th anniversary of the Museum and Historical Society. In October of 2013, 35 of her paintings were offered for sale in a Pop-up Gallery exhibition at Loft 227 in New York City. In 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019 her work was included in the “Best of the Clubs” exhibits at the Lighthouse Art Center Museum in Tequesta, FL. Her black and white tango, Dancing With the Stars, was exhibited at the juried Salem Arts Festival in June, 2018. Her portrait, Rising, won the People’s Choice Award in the Senior Art exhibit at the 2018 Marblehead Festival of the Arts.In October of 2018, Rising Again was featured in Volume 4 of Art Takes SoHo on the See.Me website, and in March of 2019, Reach was shown as part of The Affordable Art Fair in New York City.   

In April of 2017, Nancy started to participate in art competitions offered by the Light Space & Time Online Gallery, and two of her works, Film Noir and Dancing With the Stars, were included in the Special Merit Award Category of the Figurative Art Exhibition that month. In September of 2017, she was one of the 40 artists who received Special Recognition, and two of her paintings, Closeup and Pipe Dreams, were included in the 7th Annual “Open” Art Competition—Painting & Other Media, at LightSpace Time. In October, she again received Special Recognition in their Seascapes Competition—Painting & Other Media category, for Modern Family and Special Recognition in the Nature 2017 Art Exhibition for Out of Reach. The new year brought her a Special Merit Award for Madeleine at 15 and Special Recognition for Haven’t I Seen You Here Before? in the All Women Art Exhibition at the Light Space & Time Online Gallery, while Looking for Love won Special Merit and Rising received Special Recognition in their Figurative 2018 Art Exhibition. Her portrait, Reach, won a Special Merit Award in the Painting and Other Media category at LightSpaceTime in September, 2018; Diva received Special Recognition in their 8th Annual All Women Art Exhibition in January of 2019, and Madison & 33rd | circa 1952 won Special Recognition in the 9th Annual Cityscapes Exhibition in February, 2019. Flame won Special Recognition in the 9th Annual Figurative Exhibition. Fantasy won Special Merit and Steeplechase  received Special Recognition in the Primary Colors Art Exhibition in July of 2019, while Lotus Series | Spring received Special Recognition in the 9th Annual Botanicals Art Exhibition in August. Special Recognition was awarded to Black Swan in the 9th Annual Open Art Competition in September, to Lion’s Mane in the 9th Annual Nature Exhibition in December, and to Seize the Day…Rose in the 9th Annual All Women Exhibition in January, 2020. In April, Topsy Turvy won Special Recognition in the 10th Annual Figurative Art Exhibition, Hair Love for the Created in Isolation Exhibition in May, and Splash and Mixed Marriage for the 10th Annual Seascapes Exhibition in June of 2020. In July, 2020, On Fire won Special Recognition in the 2nd Primary Colors Art Exhibition and JJ the Beast won Special Recognition in the 10th Anniversary Art Exhibition. Dancing the Night Away won Special Recognition in the Open Exhibition in November 2020, and In the Pink won it in the All Women Exhibition at the end of 2020. In 2021, Nancy received Special Recognition for It Takes Two to Tango in the Figurative Art Exhibition in April, for Shall We Dance? in the Animals Art Exhibition in June and for Double Exposure in the 555 Special Art Exhibition in July. Retro also won Special Recognition in July in the Open Art Exhibition. In 2022 she has already won Special Recognition for Blue Mood in the 11th Annual All Women Exhibition. In July and August of 2020, her work was presented in the “Breakout” exhibition at M.A,D.S. Milano, an international digital gallery in Milan, Italy. In October of 2020, Nancy and her mentor, Debra Freeman Highberger, published PAINTING LESSONS | A Practical Approach to the Philosophy of Painting, a textbook teaching oil painting, on Amazon and iBooks.

Owning a condo in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, since 2005, Nancy and her husband moved there full time at the end of 2018.
