It was a delight to come home after a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with the family to find that I had won a Special Recognition Award for Lion’s Mane in the Light SpaceTime Online Gallery”s 9th Annual Nature Exhibition. 140 artists were recognized for outstanding art in the Painting and Other Media category, and I’m thrilled to be among them. The exhibition will be online at http://www.lightspacetime.art for the month of December.
The Lion’s Mane is the largest known species of jellyfish and the most gorgeous, its beauty belying its powerful stinger. I actually painted the bottom view, which looked like a flower to me and hid its signature orange and red tentacles. I continue to find painting somewhat transparent sea creatures like jellyfish and anemones a fascinating challenge.
Amidst the barrage of hurricane warnings this Labor Day weekend, it was a distinct pleasure to get an email from the LightSpaceTime Online Gallery congratulating me on winning Special Recognition in their 9th Annual Open Art Competition for Black Swan. The gallery received 782 entries from 20 different countries from around the world, as well as from 34 different states and the District of Columbia, so it’s a distinct honor to be included among the artists receiving Special Recognition in the Painting & Other Media category.
I make it a habit to regularly enter art competitions for several reasons but mostly because compliments from family and friends are lovely but no real measure of how good your work is. It’s mostly from juried competitions that you can answer the question, “How am I doing?”
Lotus Series | Spring
Unless I have a commission to work on, I generally paint whatever happens to inspire me at any given moment, and while I mostly paint portraits and figures, I have painted flora and fauna, including sea creatures and pets, food and drink, cityscapes and landscapes. I entered the Light Space & Time Online Gallery’s 9th Annual Botanicals Art Competition, & was so happy to hear that my Lotus Series | Spring received Special Recognition and will be included in their Botanicals Art Exhibition all this month. With that kind of encouragement, I may have to paint another flower or two…
How delightful to end a relaxing holiday weekend with the news that Reach won a Special Merit Award in the Painting and Other Media category of the LightSpaceTime Online Gallery Open Art Exhibition for September 2018! The gallery received 702 entries from 31 different countries from around the world, as well as from 39 different states, and I am honored to be included with 64 other artists in this category. You can enjoy a slide show of this exhibition on lightspacetime.art by clicking on the thumbnail image on their website, which will then display larger images.
The LightSpaceTime Online Gallery ran a Vacation Special Art Competition (no theme) this June, asking artists to submit five images of their best abstract or representational art to be considered for exhibition. The gallery received 1558 entries from 39 different countries around the world, 43 states and the District of Columbia. There were only five overall winners, drawn from Painting and Other Media, 3 Dimensional Art and Photography and Digital Media, so I was especially honored to find that Rising Again has won a Special Merit Award in Painting and Other Media. Take a look at www.lightspacetime.art to see the 84 artists in this category with me, since I can only show you a small sample here.
Looking for Love
I continue to enter juried art exhibitions, whenever I think my paintings are a good fit for a particular competition, since there’s no better way to be taken seriously as an artist than by getting a third party endorsement of your work. Family and friends may offer praise out of love, but the judgment of someone who doesn’t know you and does know art carries a lot more weight.
Since figurative is where I live, this one was a no brainer. I entered five paintings in the Figurative 2018 Art Exhibition, and, of those, Looking for Love was awarded Special Merit and Rising received Special Recognition and can be viewed on the Light Space & Time Gallery website. If you have the interest and/or patience to view the YouTube video of the Special Merit winners, you can see what good company I’m in.
Madeleine at 15
Madeleine at 15 won a Special Merit Award, and Haven’t I Seen You Here Before? won Special Recognition!! I entered two new competitions sponsored by the Light Space & Time Online Gallery in December and just received the results for the All Women Art Exhibition, particularly timely when feminism is the word of the year and women are being celebrated for our accomplishments. These two paintings were chosen for mention from among 1005 entries submitted from around the world. There is a slide show of this exhibition on their YouTube channel, as well as all of the gallery’s past shows.
